Krush, Kill 'N' Destroy

continued

how can I beat thee, let me count the ways
Krush's overall AI (artificial intelligence) provides a worthy opponent. Later missions are challenging even when you've played them before. Individual unit AI can be more frustrating, however. Sometimes units get stuck, but thankfully, constant vigilance over them is not necessary--they arrive eventually.

The units could also have a better sense of friendly fire. When my RPG launchers are shooting at the enemy, I wish I could keep them from Radically Plugging my Guys. Unfortunately, Krush is missing some interface amenities that would make this task easier. Krush, Kill 'N' DestroyFor example, there is no way to deselect a unit from a group of units, and there is no way to shift-click individual units in order to group them (à la WarCraft). This means units must be moved before they are grouped, and that takes time, which is precisely what I never have in a real-time game. However, Krush does have the innovative group saving feature introduced in the original Command & Conquer. Once units are grouped, hold down the Ctrl key and press 1 through 0 to save the group. The group can then be recalled by simply pressing 1 through 0.

Saying that Krush features resource management is kind of like saying that Quake features projectile management. Remembering that oil is the game's only resource, you can see why resource management isn't much of a challenge. Still, resource units must be used wisely in order to create necessary buildings and attain higher Tech Levels, where better units and special features are available. For example, you can't use the radar (overhead mini-map) to scroll around until your Outpost/Clan Hall reaches Tech Level 2.

it's no fun if you can't kill your friends
Finally, Krush has networking in all the right places. Two people can connect via serial link or modem, and up to six can connect via an IPX network. Formal alliances can be created as you would expect, but in a welcome twist, air strikes and sabotage can be executed without breaking an alliance. This allows for gray areas in alliances that aren't common in multiplayer games.

Jaded real-time strategists looking for a totally new experience might want to pass on this game. Those looking for well-produced real-time strategy title, however, will find that Krush does a good job of mixing some of the best features from several established games. Krush is not groundbreaking, but it is ground-Krushing, soldier-killing, and building-destroying fun.

tips
-In the beginning, the Survivors are a little bit easier to manage than the Evolved because the Survivors only need one building (the Machine Shop) to produce all units, as compared to the Evolved's two necessary buildings (Blacksmith and Beast Enclosure).
-Normally there is safety in numbers, but it depends on your competition. Don't group lots of troops together if the enemy is using explosives, or you will lose multiple troops per shot. Also, if you are using explosives (like RPGs or bazookas), keep your own troops out of the line of fire or they'll die along with the enemy.
-Don't underestimate the power of wheels. For example, one Survivor mission tasks you to protect a convoy. When you're outnumbered by the enemy, draw them in front of the convoy, and let the tankers simply run over them.
